Phytomem One vs Prevagen: Which Memory Supplement Makes More Sense?

Prevagen is the memory supplement most people have heard of, sold in every pharmacy. Phytomem One is a new online-only formula. They work on completely different ideas, and the evidence behind them is thin in different ways.

What Prevagen is

Prevagen has been on store shelves since around 2007 and is advertised heavily on TV. Its active ingredient, apoaequorin, is a protein originally found in a glowing jellyfish; the version in Prevagen is made in a lab. The company's theory is that it supports calcium-binding proteins in the brain that decline with age.

The main criticism is simple: apoaequorin is a protein, and proteins you swallow are generally broken down in the gut like any other food protein. Whether enough reaches the brain to do anything is an open question.

Prevagen's marketing has also been in court for years. In 2017 the FTC and the New York Attorney General sued Quincy Bioscience over its memory claims. In 2024 a jury in New York found two of the challenged claims misleading under state law, and a federal judge later ordered the company to stop making the challenged memory claims nationwide. The company has appealed.

What Phytomem One is

Phytomem One is a 10-ingredient tablet launched online in 2026. Its sales story is about microplastics in the brain and "type 3 diabetes," and its formula splits into anti-inflammatory ingredients (saffron, fucoxanthin, fucoidan, olive leaf), blood sugar ingredients (berberine, Ceylon cinnamon, banaba, kudzu flower) and two extras (Morosil and xylitol). Which one has better evidence?

Neither has the kind of evidence you'd want. They fall short in different ways.

Prevagen has a trial of the product itself, the company-funded Madison Memory Study. Across all participants it did not show a significant benefit on its main memory measures; the positive results came from smaller subgroups picked out afterward, which was central to the legal case. Outside the company, there is very little research on apoaequorin for memory.

Phytomem One has no trial of the product. What it has is research on its individual ingredients, and one of those is better studied for memory than apoaequorin. Saffron has several small randomized trials in people with mild cognitive impairment and mild Alzheimer's, including a 22-week study where 30 mg a day did about as well as the drug donepezil (Akhondzadeh, 2010). Phytomem One, though, doesn't say how much saffron is in each tablet.

If I had to choose on evidence alone, I'd give a slight edge to the saffron in Phytomem One over the apoaequorin in Prevagen, with the big caveat about doses.

Price

Prevagen prices are typical large-retailer prices in October 2026 and vary by store. Phytomem One prices are from the official order page; details are on the price and refund page.

Month for month, the two are close once you buy Phytomem One in the 3- or 6-bottle pack. The difference is that Prevagen lets you buy one bottle at a pharmacy, while Phytomem One asks for at least $158 up front.

Safety

This is where Prevagen has a clear advantage. A small dose of a protein and some vitamin D is unlikely to interact with medications.

Phytomem One has more going on. Berberine, cinnamon, olive leaf and banaba all lower blood sugar, fucoidan has blood-thinning activity in lab studies, and berberine changes how the liver processes many prescription drugs. Which one fits you

Prevagen may suit you if you take several prescription medications, want something from a local pharmacy, or want to try a single bottle before committing.

Phytomem One may suit you if you are in good health, not on diabetes or blood-thinning medication, interested in saffron's memory research, and would also like help keeping blood sugar steady. Buy the 3-bottle pack so you can judge it inside the refund window.

Neither is the right first step if your memory is getting noticeably worse or other people are commenting on it. The National Institute on Aging explains which memory changes are normal with age and which deserve a doctor's visit, and several common causes, like thyroid problems, low vitamin B12 and medication side effects, are treatable.
